Self-Love is not a Spa Day

Self-Love has become a real buzz word on social media but what is it really?

Spa Days, pamper sessions, massages, lunch with your besties...these are all fabulous ways to take me-time and practice self-care and they're a really great idea but they're NOT Self-Love.

Loving the skin you're in (Self-Care) is a natural and beautiful result of Self-Love. It isn't Self-Love though and not to be confused.

What is Self-Love?

Self-Love is about the Essence of who you are, it's about your Shadow Self, your Higher Self, your scars, emotions, lessons, downfalls, weaknesses and strengths.

It requires journeying within and venturing into every crevice of your body, mind, heart & soul. It requires facing those painful memories that you have stored in the recesses of your Being, hoping never to have contact again. It is feeling your fear, your anxiety, your stress and knowing that you are more powerful than they are.

Self-Love is being accountable for every thought, every word, every action. It is a commitment to conscious living, to living on purpose.

Self-Love is Self-Awareness, it is choosing to live AWAKE again and again every day, even when all you want to do is give up and give in to the easier path of ignorance.

It is getting to know your own Divinity, your own power, your responsibility to Life.

What does it look like?

Here's a story...

It was a normal Saturday at the end of the month, just after payday. My husband and I were going to do the monthly shopping. For a change, our young daughter wasn't coming with us and my husband suggested we go for breakfast before shopping. I felt so excited - this was almost like a date!

We went to our favourite breakfast spot, nearby to where we would be doing the shopping. For a change, it wasn't at Wimpy near the kiddie's play area. We were enjoying the delights of a grown up breakfast.

After we had eaten and were enjoying another cup of coffee, my husband blurted out "I can't do this anymore!" Not sure what he meant, I asked him to clarify and he told me he didn't feel he could stay married to me any longer.

It took a minute for me to compute what he had said. I felt the colour drain from my face and heat replace it...the room went out of focus and everything sounded muffled. I asked him what he meant again and he repeated himself. I said that I didn't understand and he responded with a bit more of his truth.

We left the restaurant and did the shopping; me in a weird state of semi-awareness the whole time, with a million thoughts running through my mind.

This experience threw me into self-doubt, self-pity, pain, anger, resentment, blame and the list goes on. It took me a while to acknowledge the other side of the truth - that I too felt that I couldn't carry on with our marriage the way that it was, that it had taken two of us to create it the way that it was and that there was no victim, only two people trying to figure it all out.

As soon as I arrived at this place, I was able to start practicing Self-Love. I was able to look at my True Essence, my Inner Truth and I was able to hear from my Higher Self, my Soul.

I was able to see myself as I was, able to release the self-doubt, self-pity and blame. The pain was still there and I was able to own it and practice self-care in a state of self-awareness. I was able to face my Shadow Self and see my role in the demise of our relationship.

Stepping into the open-minded, open-hearted, open-spirited space of Self-Love and embracing the light and the dark, doing the work; all of this enabled me to navigate a really challenging time with grace, with love, with respect.

By choosing self-Love, I was also choosing my Personal Power.

It sounds hard, so why bother?
